Introduction
CERID as a national research centre working in the field of education in Nepal is committed to promoting quality of education and working for academic excellence by conducting research, training and innovative activities.
Historical Perspective
CERID pioneered the Lahachok pilot project on Education for Rural Development. The special feature of this NFE project was to make the local school play the role of a change agent in the community it serves. The experiences acquired, developing and implementing educational programmes for community development in Nepal.
World Education-funded three year pilot project on Integrated Non-formal Education Programme in which emphasis was laid on awareness-raising-skill training activities along with the component of functional literacy.
Non-formal Education and Rural Income Generation for Chepang (Praja) Women and Youthsfor which the prestigious Raja Roy Singh Award instituted by UNESCO Staff Association, Bangkok was conferred.
A three-year project on Determinants of Educational Participation in Rural Nepal. The aims of this World Education Inc. /USA-funded project were to identify and assess the various factors that affect participation of children in education and in their regularity of attendance in primary school classes.
In the financial support of International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, CERID has already completed a longitudinal research project on Institutional Improvement in Primary School in two phases.
A five-year project on staff development, funded by CIDA, Canada, in collaboration with the University of Alberta. Under this project 5 senior researchers of CERID have completed their Ph.D. at the University of Alberta (U of A) Canada. Under this program 14 staff members from CERID have been to U of A for short-term study visits and four Canadian researchers have paid educational visits to CERID.
The Centre has undertaken a number of evaluative studies which include (i) UNICEF-supported Education of Girls and Women in Nepal, (ii) UNESCO-financed Education for Rural Development in Seti Zone, (iii) World Bank, UNDP, UNESCO-supported Primary Education Project, (iv) USAID-assisted Radio Education Teacher Training Project, and (v) FAO-sponsored Nutrition Education and Vitamin - A Project, UNESCO Bangkok Supported An Assessment of CLC Operation in Nepal and A Study on Community Ownership and External Intervention for Sustainability of Community Learning Centre in Nepal. ECD and other projects have been conduced by CERID during the period of 2005 – 2008.
Similarly some of the major research studies conducted so far by CERID include Primary Education in Nepal: Progress towards Universalization, Raising Achievement Level of Primary School Children, Multiple Teaching in Primary Schools, Status of UPE for Girls in Nepal and Universalization of Primary Education. IIEP-sponsored Decentralised Management in the Primary Education in Nepal. ILO-funded Mobilization of Teachers, Educators and Their Organizations in Combating Child Labour. UNESCO/Paris-supported Promotion of Girls Education Through Recruitment and Training of Female Teachers. World Bank-sponsored Primary School Drop-outs-Nepal Portion. CERID has also conducted quite a few action research/training programmes for girls and disadvantaged groups.
The Centre has hosted and organised several other seminars on various aspects of education.
Formative Research Project (FRP) Ist phase (in the fiscal year 2001/2002) has been completed under the technical and support of the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES)/Nepal and the Ministry of Education and Research/Norway for an effective implementation of the Basic and Primary Education Programme (BPEP) II. Thus, this project was an integral component of Basic Primary Education Project II. The aim of FRP is to conduct research studies of practical nature, which will contribute to the smooth and effective implementation of BPEP II programmes.

Highlights of Activities
On the regular budget it receives from Tribhuvan University, CERID carries out regular research activities including publications and seminars every year. CERID, by virtue of its capability, experience and expertise, constantly looks for and makes a bid for externally sponsored projects.
Formative Research Project: CERID has completed the Formative Research Project (FRP) (2001-2004) and is conducting the FRP for Education for All (2004-2009) for the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES)/Nepal under the technical assistance of the Ministry of Education and Research/Norway.
The overall objective of FRP 2nd phase for EFA is to provide technical support to the Ministry of Education and Sports by bringing forward strategic research-based information on the process of effective implementation of EFA 2004-09 and by assisting its capacity building initiatives. There are above 50 publications under this project including regular FRP bulletins.
A summary report of the case studies has also been prepared in Nepali language and distributed to all Regional Education Directorates, DEOs, ETCs and resource centres. The report was also distributed to the participants of the dissemination seminars held at the regional level.
A synthesis report of the researches conducted in 2006-07 has been prepared. This report presents a synthesis of the case studies, their findings and recommendations. It also includes a reflection of the studies and their findings.
Undertaking of New Researches (2007-08)
In the fourth year of the project (that covers the period 15 July 2007 to 14 July 2008) five case studies (Mini-researches) have been undertaken starting from December 2007 and two Micro-researches from April 2008.
The research topics were identified through a series of meetings held at MOES, review of FRP reports completed recently, suggestions received from the regional seminars and through suggestions received from MOES and DOE officials.The titles of the ongoing mini-research case studies are as follows:

Organization of Dissemination Seminars
In order to disseminate the major findings and recommendations of the studies conducted in 2006-07 a dissemination seminar was organized for the MOES, DOE, NCED, CDC and NFEC officials on 26 and 27 September 2007. Similarly, the dissemination seminars are also being organized in all five development regions. The regional level dissemination seminars are participated in by representatives of the REDs, DEOs, SSs, RPs, SMCs, Municipalities/ VDCs, Journalists and school head-teachers and teachers.
Sharing of FRP Activities to EFA Donor Agencies
A sharing session of FRP activities to the donor agencies was organized on 11th March 2008. The meeting was organized at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Pulchok, Lalitpur. The meeting was participated in by representatives from the major EFA donor agencies, Norwegian Embassy and CERID researchers. In the meeting three presentations were made. The first presentation was on achievements and challenges of FRP in general. The second presentation was on FRP studies related to classroom transformation for better conditions of pedagogical processes. The third one was on Longitudinal System Indicators Study. The presentations were followed by plenary discussions. The participants of the meeting were made aware about the progress and contributions made by FRP in the educational reform program in Nepal.
Capacity BuildingActivities
Institutional cooperation and capacity building between MOES and MOER is an in-built part of FRP. In this context, Capacity Building Workshops were organized on June 2 - 3, 2007 and November 7 – 8, 2007. The workshops focused on: review of the Action Steps suggested by FRP, overview of the on-going capacity building activities under FRP for EFA and the Institutional Linkage Program, and the listing of capacity building activities for the current year.
Community-based Approaches in Basic and Primary Education: An Action Research Project has been completed.
Dialogue Sessions: Dialogue Sessions are organised in various subjects and recent issues and trends in education.
Trainings
Training/Workshop on Educational Research Methodology from July 2 to 9 2008, jointly organized by Faculty of Education and Research Centre for Educational Innovation and Development, Tribhuvan University in the financial and technical support of University Grants Commission.
Training on environment, education and solid waste management was conducted in the Bungmati VDC. Teacher training on science and environmental education was conducted in Bhaktapur.
Gender Education: Dialogue sessions, research studies, teacher trainings (for school teachers), curriculum revision have been organised. These activities focused on the issues of gender and social equity.
Collaborative Relationship
CERID has a strong link with the National Planning Commission, the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Department of Education and Programmes of MOES such as BPEP and SEDP, and HSEB. CERID is also linked to international organizations like UNESCO, UNICEF/Nepal, the World Bank, ILO/IPEC/Nepal, ICIMOD, CECI/Nepal, NORAD, and the British Council.
CERID has established resource centres for alternative forms of learning and ECD. It has been undertaking several training and research activities focused on Literacy, Health and ECD in collaboration with UNICEF/Nepal.
CERID is in professional linkage with renowned universities such as University of Alberta/Canada, University of Massachusetts/USA and John Moores University of Liverpool/UK.
CERID has mutually signed the Memoranda of Understanding with University of Alberta/Canada, Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI/Seoul and SANN Research Institute of Colorado/USA for conducting joint research, training and development activities.
International organizations like IDRC/Canada, CIDA/Canada, and IIEP/Paris have considerably helped in expanding CERID's activities and enhancing its professional expertise.
CERID is in working relationship with several other international organizations, namely UNESCO/Bangkok, APEID/Bangkok and Asian Development Bank/Manila. It is also a member of the Asian Network of Training and Research Institutions for Educational Planning (ANTRIEP).
CERID has entered into collaboration with MOES and the Ministry of Education, Norway for formative research activities pertaining to the Basic and Primary Education Programme of the Department of Education.

Publication
It brings out three annual journals – Education and Development (in English) and Vikasko Nimti Shikshya (in Nepali). The journals contain reflective well as research-specific articles on topical aspects of education in Nepal. In the year 2002 it started a journal of Early Childhood Development.
It publishes newsletters and bulletins on current activities.
CERID publishes the reports of its research projects. So far it has, published about 400 publications in English and in Nepali.
