Major Research Projects
The Formative Research Project (FRP), undertaken by CERID for the Basic and Primary Education Program II for the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES) of His Majesty’s Government (HMG) of Nepal with the financial and technical support from the Royal Ministry of Education and Research (UFD) of Norway, was successfully completed in November 2004. Fourteen different studies, each covering a specific area of basic and primary education, were undertaken in the year 2004. A completion report on the whole project was prepared. A summary report of the research outcomes (in Nepali) was also prepared for wider dissemination.
The FRP for EFA 2004 – 2009 has recently been launched. A contract between the MOES and CERID was signed on 3 December 2004 for this purpose. The formation of FRAG and the hiring of researchers are underway.
A project on Community Empowerment for Sustainable Environment was run in Bungamati. The project was sponsored by UNESCO Bangkok. This project included mobilization of community and schools for betterment and sustainable management of the environment. Teacher training programs on environmental education were also organized for school teachers. Action research programs on maintaining better environment were conducted in two temple premises, Bungamati and Bhadrakali, in which school children were involved.
Under the Basic Education for Poverty Alleviation Project (Bungamati action research) sponsored by UNESCO various activities were successfully completed. Two training packages—one on entrepreneurship and the other on compost manure—had been developed. The training programs were conducted particularly for local teachers, community leaders and farmers.
The UNESCO/IIEP sponsored project Improving School Management: Capacity Building for Head Teachers, which started in 2003, was continued. The project analyzes the roles and functions of head teachers in the successful management and development of schools. This study is part of a bigger effort in the area of school management in the member countries of ANTRIEP.
A study on Girls in Science and Technology Education was recently completed. The project was sponsored by UNESCO.
A project on Gender Experiences in Public School of Nepal was completed in April. This study was an effort to understand the gender issues in the secondary level of schools in Nepal. The study was supported by DFID and conducted jointly by CERID and Liverpool John Moores University.
The Process Documentation of Home-based ECD Program implemented by Seto Gurans National Child Development Services, Parsa with the support from UNICEF Nepal was undertaken by CERID. This study was sponsored by the Central Regional Office of UNICEF Nepal.
CERID is one of the key partners of the Primary Education Improvement Project of UNICEF Nepal. The project aims to construct and rehabilitate primary school building in Parsa, Kapilvastu and Saptari districts. CERID has taken the responsibility of the "software" component of the project, which involves technical support for community mobilization, capacity building of SMCs and PTAs. It also supports the development of the physical environment and facilities of the schools, taking into account the quality pedagogical considerations.
A project on the development of TU Teachers and Administrative Staff Profile was completed. This project report lists up brief profiles of all TU teachers and administrative staff members. The profiles were drawn up mainly for the purpose of record-keeping, management and preparation of development plans.
Seminars and Workshops
Various seminars and workshops were organized as per the nature and objectives of the projects and studies undertaken.
A high-level seminar was organized at CERID on 9th August to review the achievements and experiences of FRP. Honourable State Minister for Education and Sports Mr. Bal Krishna Khand, Her Excellency Ingrid Oftad (Ambassador of the Royal Norwegian Government), Mr. Bidhyadhar Mallik (Secretary of the MOES) and other dignitaries had taken part.
For FRP regional seminars were organized in the Eastern, Western and Central Regions of the country for the purpose of disseminating the findings and recommendations of the research studies. At the central level FRP (Year III) Dissemination Seminar was held at Park Village, Budhanilkantha, on 1st July 2004. In this seminar over a hundred persons, including Mr. Bidhyadhar Mallik (Secretary of the MOES) and Mr. Chuman Singh Basnyat (Director General of DOE) participated
Research Support
The library and the ECD and NFE resource centers of CERID were regularly used by education researchers and professionals as well as by students of higher education. These CERID units provided documentary research support to the users on all work days all through–out the year.
Publications
CERID publishes two annual journals—Vikas ko Nimti Shiksha (in Nepali) and Education and Development. The ECD Resource Center publishes the Journal of Early Childhood Development. The second issue of this journal was published in November 2004. A Newsletter on ECD, a fact sheet on NFE and a newsletter on FRP were published as part of the regular program. Twenty-two research reports were prepared, copies of which were distributed to concerned organizations and individuals. Some copies are also available at CERID library.
Visits to and from CERID
In connection with FRP, Professor Kristin Tornes, Mr. Denkert Vedler, Mr. Hakon Brojnes, Mr. Rasmus Gedde-Dahl and Mr. Kikkan Haugen (all from Norway) and Ms. Lucille Gregorio (from UNESCO Bangkok) visited CERID.
A team led by Professor Hridaya Ratna Bajracharya visited John Moores University from 28 August to 7 September 2004 under the HE linkage program. They also participated in the British Association for International and Comparative Education (BAICE) conference held in the University of Sussex in Brighton.
Professor Hridaya Ratna Bajracharya also participated in the International Seminar on Bridging the Gap between Scientists and Science Educators held in Shanghai, China from 4 to 12 November 2004.
A team of researchers composed of Prof. Bajracharya, Ms. Neera Shakya, Dr. Prem Aryal and Dr. Ganesh Bahadur Mali participated in the seminar on Multi Grade Teaching held in Srilanka from 18 to 24 April 2004.
Prof. Bajracharya also participated in the IIEP Workshop on Successful School Management held in the Philippines from 6 to 9 July 2004. He was accompanied by Mr. Arjun Bahadur Bhandari, Executive Director of NECD.
Prof. Rukmini Bajracharya participated in the regional workshop on Management of Curriculum Change held in Manila, the Philippines from 29 March to 2 April 2004. She also attended the expert review meeting on Leading and Facilitating Curriculum Change held in Thailand from 13 to 17 December 2004.
Dr. Kishor Shrestha went to participate in the International conference on Building Bridges: Healing Communities through Early Childhood Education held in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
A team of FRP researchers and officials went on a study visit to NIEPA and NCERT in New Delhi from 26 April to 7 May 2004. The team was led by Dr. Kishor Shrestha, Coordinator of FRP.
A team of FRP-related officials from MOES and CERID visited Norway on a program to review the FRP I activities and in connection with signing of the FRP for EFA from 16 to 26 November 2004. The team was led by Mr. Bidhyadhar Mallik, Secretary of MOES.
Physical Facilities Update
With CERID's own fund a research block was constructed on the land provided by TU Central Office. The newly constructed building has five big rooms, which are being used currently for library, meeting hall, NFE resource center and researchers' cubicals.
Each of these rooms and the rooms in the original building were interlinked with intercom facilities. A networking of the computers available in all the rooms has also been set up.
